Support for International Students (J.H.S./H.S.)

"We look after each and every person."

From the time of enrollment, international students are placed in the same homerooms as domestic students. International students come from various backgrounds and each has unique language abilities and learning histories. For this reason, we create individual timetables and support the students so that they can study at their own pace. For international students who have studied overseas, we have set up International Progress Classes in the four subjects of Japanese, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, in which instructors provide Japanese language support in areas of student need.

In the International English Course, qualified native teachers deliver classes based on international English standards to maintain and improve the English language skills of our students. This course is for high ESL-level , near-native, and native speakers of English. Students read from a wide variety of texts, from classics to modern literature, producing discussions, debates, and written compositions. The school also prepares students for English proficiency tests such as EIKEN, TOEFL, SAT, and IELTS. We offer maintenance classes in 5 languages to continue developing skills that each student has cultivated.

What we value

Developing Self-esteem

Unfamiliar language, living in a different culture and customs...In Japanese school life, where the living environment changes in many ways, there are times when students are no longer able to easily do what they once did.

At Keimei Gakuen, we are sympathetic to these feelings and support each student in developing a sense of confidence and growth by setting and achieving language and learning goals alongside them.

Peer Support

Junior and senior high school students can take classes at Japanese language levels appropriate for them (International Progress Class). International students have the opportunity to study in a spacious shared-learning environment supported and encouraged by their peers and seniors. In addition to guidance from teachers and students, the presence of friends with whom they can share their worries also offers strong emotional support. We value an environment that fosters such peer support.

Supporting All Languages

The languages that students have used up until now support their thoughts, learning, and hearts. In order to improve their Japanese language skills, Keimei Gakuen values all languages that students possess. In addition to English, we also offer foreign language retention classes in French, German, Korean, Chinese, and Spanish.*

Teacher's Voice

Noshiro Rei,
International Education Department Head

I myself studied at Keimei Gakuen as a returnee student, and I now offer advice to international students, recalling the anxieties and successes I had at the time.

I transferred to Keimei Gakuen in my second year of junior high school. Although I was able to study Japanese, math, science, and social studies in classes with native-Japanese speakers by the end junior high school, I still felt the pressure of changing my primary language and the difference in English ability among returnee students. On the other hand, the fun of intercultural exchange is also a unique attraction of this school. After realizing this, I was able to have many experiences, such as devoting myself to high school baseball and playing in a band at the school festival, while interacting with friends of various nationalities and teachers who support the strengths of students.

When I became a teacher and listened to the concerns of international students, I remembered myself at that time and I could empathize with them. Everyone has a moment when they break through their barriers. I would like to use my experience to continue to support each and every student.
