   新入生の皆さん、入学おめでとうございます。ようこそ啓明学園中学校高等学校へ。私たちは皆さんをこころより歓迎します。
   また保護者の皆様におかれましても、お子様が中学校・高等学校という、次の学びのステージに登られたこと、こころよりお祝い申し上げます。おめでとうございます。卒業の際には、啓明学園に預けてよかったと言っていただけるよう、本校教職員一丸となって生徒の教育に当たってまいります。一方で教育は、学校と家庭とが共に同じ方向を向いていなければなりません。今後、皆様のご理解とご協力をいただく場面が多々出てくるかと思いますが、その際はどうかよろしくお願いいたします。
   今日から、啓明学園の初等学校、中学校から内部進学した生徒に加え、入学試験を突破してきた生徒が合わさり、新たな学校生活がスタートします。特に今日から啓明生となる皆さんは、ことのほか緊張していることでしょう。確かに出来上がっている人間関係の輪の中に入るのは少し勇気が要りますね。ですが心配はいりません。啓明生は他者を受け入れるということを一番の価値として学んできています。すぐに分け隔てなく打ち解けあうことができるでしょう。ただ、お互い、相手に受け入れてもらうためには、まずは自分自身を相手に伝えなければなりませんね。これまで啓明生だった生徒も、新たに啓明生となった生徒も、皆が自分自身を相手に伝えていく積極性が求められます。
　その時、意識してほしいのが、この壇上後方に掲げている４つの標語です。正直・純潔・無私・敬愛。正直に、純真な自分自身を、自分本位にならないよう、相手に敬愛の念をもって、話してください。この４つの標語は啓明学園が大切にしている価値です。相手に接するとき、常にこの４つの言葉を思い出しましょう。
　あともうひとつ、啓明学園では「世界を心に入れた人を育てる」という教育理念があります。これについて、少しお話ししたいと思います。まず私はこの表現がとても大好きです。「グローバルな視野を身に付ける」なんて今や、ありふれた表現よりも、よほど耳に残るし、立ち止まってその意味を考えたくなります。
　昨年秋、韓国にルーツを持つ女子生徒と話をする機会がありました。彼女は、ふとしたことから同じく韓国にルーツを持つフォトジャーナリスト、安田奈津紀さんのことを知りました。安田さんへの親近感とその仕事内容を知ったその生徒は、安田さんのことをとても尊敬しているようでした。ご存じの方もあるかとおもいますが、安田奈津紀さんはカンボジアから始まってアフガニスタン、そしてシリアと、紛争のある地域に行き、その中で最も現実的に、また精神的に大きな苦痛を受けている、子供たちの状況を取材して、世界に発信している新進気鋭のジャーナリストです。最近では日本における差別や貧困の問題についても発信し続けています。私も彼女の講演を以前、聞いたことがあったのですが、まず圧倒的な行動力、そして現場を実際に体験したからこその、深い洞察力、現地の人たちとの信頼関係を想像させる、生き生きとした写真が見る者を圧倒します。
　生徒の「安田さんのようになるには」という問いに対する良い答えを私は持っているわけではありませんが、安田さんの『写真で伝える仕事』という本を紹介しました。今日はその本の中の一節を紹介します。「学ぶということは自分以外の誰かの心を守ること。」
　「学ぶということは自分以外の誰かの心を守ること」。これだけだと何の意味だかよくわかりませんね。安田さんは無知・無関心がひいては困難な人たちをさらに傷つけていると述べています。ですからその反対に、多くを知ろうとすること、多くを学ぶこと、それは、ひいてはそうした困難に直面している人々の心を、直接的に間接的に守ることになるんだよ、と日本の中高生に向けて言っているのです。
　さあ話を元に戻します。今日私が皆さんにお伝えしたいのは、世界で起きている様々なことにまず疑問をもって、関心を寄せて、調べて、学んで、周囲と話し合って、そして行動すること。それが「世界を心に入れる」ことにつながっていきます。もっと端的に言えば、今、世界で起きているさまざまな出来事に、無関心であってはなりません。疑問をもちましょう。それが啓明学園の生徒となる第一歩です。
   最後に、よく中学・高校の友は一生の友といいます。ですからぜひ友達をつくって、と言いたいところですが、私はあえて「ライバルを作ってください」と申し上げます。新たなスタートを切る皆さん、ぜひライバルを作ってください。私の言うライバルとは、勝負を挑む相手という意味です。勉強でもスポーツでも芸術でもいい。また例えば 英語はあの人、数学はこの人 でもいいです。目標となる友人、すごいなと思える友人、絶対に負けたくない友人を探してください。そして、密かに、あるいはおおっぴらに、勝負を挑んでください。勝負を挑んだからには 勝たなければなりません。恥ずかしい負け方をしないように、勉強するんです。練習するんです。大いに友達と競い合いましょう。
  皆さんがこの啓明学園で、夢を持って努力していけば、高校卒業後、さらに大学・大学院を卒業して社会の第一線で活躍する頃には、皆さんの目の前に、きっと素晴らしい道が広がっていることでしょう。本校は努力する皆さんを全力で応援します。元気よくがんばっていきましょう。

   To all new students, congratulations on your enrolment at Keimei Gakuen Junior and Senior High School. I am delighted to welcome you here today.
   I would also like to congratulate all the parents of these new students on your child's entrance into their next stage of learning, at the junior high school or high school level. We here will work as one to educate our students so that upon graduation, they can have the pleasure of saying that they were glad to have been entrusted to Keimei Gakuen. At the same time, education requires that school and family work together towards the same goal. I am sure that there will be many occasions in the future when we will need your understanding and cooperation and I thank you in advance.
   From today, a new school life will start for students who have passed our entrance examination in addition to those who have advanced internally from Keimei Gakuen's elementary and junior high school. I am sure that all of you, especially those of you who are new to Keimei, must be nervous. It certainly takes a little courage to join a new group filled with people who are already comfortable with one another. However, there is no need to worry. Students here at Keimei understand well the important value of accepting others. Perhaps quicker than you think, you will soon be able to open up to others without hesitation. In order for everyone to accept each other, however, we must push ourselves to take the first step. Whether you are a former Keimei student or a new Keimei student, you must be proactive in making relationships with others.
　In those moments, I would like you to remember the four mottos displayed behind this podium. Honesty. Purity. Selflessness. And Respect. Speak honestly, present yourself purely, rather than in a self-centred way, and offer respect to others. These four mottos are the values that Keimei Gakuen holds dear. Always remember these four words when dealing with others.
Another integral educational philosophy of Keimei Gakuen is "to nurture people who have the world in their hearts”. I would like to talk a little about this. First of all, I admire this expression greatly. It is far catchier than the now similar, common-place expressions like "develop a global perspective," with the former making me want to stop and think about its meaning more deeply.
　Last fall, I had the opportunity to talk with a female student who has roots in Korea. She had suddenly learned about Natsuki Yasuda, a photojournalist who also has a background in the same country. The student, who felt a kinship with Yasuda and learned about her work, seemed to have great respect for her. As some of you may know, Natsuki Yasuda is an up-and-coming journalist who has travelled to areas of conflict, starting in Cambodia, then Afghanistan, and now Syria, to report on the distressing but real situations of the children in these areas and to share her findings with the world. Recently, she has continued to depict issues of discrimination and poverty in Japan. I have heard her lecture before and I was overwhelmed by her passionate resolve, insight gained from her first-hand experiences, and vivid photographs that evoke a relationship of trust with local people.
　The aforementioned student asked me, "How can I be like Yasuda?" to which I did not have a good answer. Instead, I introduced her to the book, "Conveying Work Through Photography” by Natsuki Yasuda. Today, I would like to share with you a passage from that book. "To learn is to protect the heart of someone other than yourself.
　“To learn is to protect the heart of someone other than yourself." The meaning behind this passage is ambiguous. Yasuda states that ignorance and indifference perpetuate difficulties in those who are already troubled. From this, Yasuda seems to be encouraging Japanese junior and senior high school students to know more and learn more, which in turn will protect the hearts of those who are facing such difficulties, directly and indirectly.
　Now my speech has come full circle. What I would like to say to you today is to first question, pay attention to, investigate, learn, discuss with others, and act on the various happenings in the world. This will lead to "letting the world into our hearts”. To put it more simply, we should not be indifferent to the various events occurring in the world today. Question them. That is the first step to becoming a student of Keimei Gakuen.
   Finally, I have often heard of students from the junior and senior high school remaining friends for life. Therefore, I of course encourage you to make friends, but I also dare to say, please make rivals. By "rival" I mean someone with whom you are willing to compete with. It can be in areas study, sport, art, or elsewhere. For example, it could be that person in your English or in your math class. Find a friend to be your rival, a friend you think is great, a friend you never want to lose to. Then, challenge them to a competition, either secretly or openly. If you challenge them to something, do your best to win. Work hard so you do not lose. Practice. Compete with your friends.
  If you keep your dreams and work hard, by the time you graduate from high school, college, or graduate school, and become active on the front lines of society, a wonderful path will surely be spread out before your eyes. Our school will do its utmost to support you in your endeavours. Let us all work hard and happily.
